HC Deb 03 July 1991 vol 194 cc164-5W
Mr. Knox

To ask the Secretary of State for Health by how much expenditure on the national health service has increased in North Staffordshire in(a) real and (b) cash terms since May 1979.

Mr. Dorrell

The North Staffordshire health authority was established on I April 1982. The annual accounts of the authority record total revenue expenditure of £71.2 million cash for 1982–83 and £124.0 million cash for 1989–90—the latest year available. Those figures represent increases of 74.2 per cent. in cash terms and 20.7 per cent. in real terms, measured at 1989–90 prices.

Prior to 1 April 1982 the authority's predecessor health district formed part of the larger Staffordshire area health authority. The annual accounts of the health authorities responsible for services in Staffordshire as a whole record total expenditure of £68.3 million cash for 1978–79 and £234.9 million cash for 1989–90. Those figures represent increases of 244 per cent. in cash terms and 47 per cent. in real terms, measured at 1989–90 prices.
