(3) if he will publish the results of his Department's latest survey into teacher vacancies in Wales.

Sir Wyn Roberts

The latest survey on teacher vacancies was carried out in January 1991. The results are included in the following tables which show the number of teacher vacancies in all schools and the number of vacancies by subject in secondary schools between 1986 and 1991. Comparable information for the primary sector is not available for 1986 and 1987. Details of teacher vacancies by subject in primary schools and by grade are not held centrally.

1 Prior to 1991 the number of vacancies for teachers taking Welsh was included with those vacancies for teachers taking other languages. LEAs also reported teacher vacancies for teachers required to teach two languages in this category.
2 Separately identified figures for heads and deputy heads were collected for the first time in 1988 possibly resulting in undercounting in earlier years. But to the extent that they were recorded prior to 1988 they will have been allocated to a teaching subject, slightly inflating the number of vacancies in individual subjects relative to their 1988 value.

Notes:

1. Vacancies are recorded for full-time permanent appointments or full-time appointments of at least one term's duration which an authority intends to fill or to which it has unsuccessfully attempted to make such an appointment.

2. The number of teachers is provided by LEAs on the form 618G and relates to all teachers working full-time. The number of teaching posts has been estimated by applying the proportion of teachers in each subject obtained from the 1989 Secondary School Staffing Survey to the number of full-time teachers in post in each year.
