HC Deb 01 July 1991 vol 194 c24W
Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether Her Majesty's Government are sending official observers from the United Kingdom to observe the elections in Guyana in October; what support(a) the United Nations and (b) the Commonwealth are giving in the conduct of the elections; and what contribution Her Majesty's Government are making towards the costs of such assistance.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Government of Guyana have indicated that they will allow only official election observers from the Carter centre and the Commonwealth secretariat.

We have agreed to make a substantial contribution towards the costs of the Commonwealth observer mission, in line with the established formula governing contributions from Commonwealth member states to the Commonwealth secretariat's activities.

I have no information that the United Nations will play a role during the elections in Guyana.

A date for the elections has not yet been announced.
