HL Deb 30 January 1991 vol 525 c31WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How a decision to conclude the present Gulf war will be taken and by whom in the event that Iraqi forces are removed from Kuwait.

Lord Reay

SCR 678 authorises UN member states co-operating with the Government of Kuwait to use all necessary means to uphold and implement its Resolution 660 and all subsequent relevant resolutions and to restore international peace and security in the region. Hostilities will cease when their contribution to achieving these objectives has been completed.

Any modification of the UN sanctions currently on Iraq would be a matter for the Security Council.

Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

With which other member states of the European Community they discussed the desirability and timing of the attack on Iraq.

Lord Reay

The Gulf crisis has been discussed regularly by the members of the EC since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on 2nd August.

Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the decision to spread the Gulf war to a Turkish front was discussed with and approved by them.

Lord Reay

Turkey is responding to UN Security Council Resolution 678, by providing additional support for the action undertaken against Iraq by the multinational force in pursuance of that resolution.
