HC Deb 25 January 1991 vol 184 c363W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were unemployed in Scotland in December of every year since 1979(a) using the current system of calculating unemployment and (b) using the system of calculating unemployment current in 1979.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The Department of Employment publishes seasonally adjusted estimates of the number unemployed in Scotland monthly on a basis consistent with the current system of calculating unemployment. Estimates for December of each year since 1979 are available from the NOMIS database in the House of Commons Library. Library staff are ready to assist in accessing the information if necessary.

Estimates are not available using the system of calculating unemployment current in 1979. There is no reliable basis on which to make such estimates as it is
