§ Mrs. RumboldThe only readily available information on the types of drug offences committed by sentenced 351W prisoners does not separately identify males and females; it is published annually in Prison statistics England and Wales (Table 1(a) of the latest volume, for 1989, Cm.1221), copies of which are in the Library. On 30 June 1989 an estimated 1,300 prisoners had been sentenced for unlawful import/export of drugs.
Information about the remand population by type of offence is not available centrally. The readily available information gives the offences of persons received on remand into Prison Service establishments (table 2.11 of Prison Statistics England and Wales 1989).

Mrs. RamboldThe present central computer system on parole does not hold information on the nationality of prisoners and it is not, therefore, possible to produce the figures requested. However, a new system is scheduled for this year which will make such analyses possible.
