Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many teachers in(a) England and (b) Wales have taken early retirement in each of the years since 1979 on grounds of (i) redundancy/interests of efficiency and (ii) health.

Separate figures in respect of ill-health retirements from(a) England and (b) Wales are riot readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. The information relating to premature retirement figures, together with the total number of ill-health retirements, is as follows:
