§ Mr. Tony Banks
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current approximate daily cost of British involvement in the Gulf area.

§ Mr. Archie Hamilton
As at 16 January the approximate full daily operating cost of our forces in the Gulf area was estimated to be £3.6 million per day.

§ Mr. Steen
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether the Meteorological Office has assessed the possible environmental impacts of oil wells in Kuwait being set alight during any hostilities in the Gulf.

§ Mr. Archie Hamilton
The Meteorological Office has produced a note for the Government on the possible environmental impacts of burning oil wells in Kuwait. I am placing a copy of this note in the Library of the House. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment will be taking forward further work on this subject.
