HL Deb 17 January 1991 vol 524 cc85-6WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have anything to add to Lord Henley's Answer on income support to refugees (HL Deb., 19th December 1990, cols. 827–828).

Lord Henley

I have nothing to add to the Answer which I gave on 19th December (HL Deb., cols. 827-828). Asylum seekers are among the groups of people who are not entitled to income support under the normal rules but whose circumstances make it appropriate for them to receive some benefit. For them, as for the other comparable groups, 90 per cent. of the personal allowance is paid, together with the full amounts for children and any appropriate premiums. The Government have to make judgments about where to direct extra resources that become available for social security. We have concluded that asylum seekers are not a priority group for further assistance at this time.
