HC Deb 17 January 1991 vol 183 c546W
Mr. Bill Michie

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list for each civil defence region(a) the name of the current chief regional scientific adviser, (b) the date of appointment of the current chief regional scientific adviser, (c) the age of the current chief regional scientific adviser, (d) the employment of the current chief regional scientific adviser at the time of his appointment as chief regional scientific adviser and (e) the amounts paid to each chief regional scientific adviser in each of the last five years in the form of salary, retainer and expenses.

Mr. John Patten

The Home Office has responsibility for appointing a chief regional scientific adviser (CRSA) for the nine home defence regions in England and Wales. The Scottish Home and Health Department and Northern Ireland Office have similar responsibilities for their own home defence regions.

CRSAs are not paid either a salary or a retainer as part of their civil defence duties. They are paid expenses as professional lecturing fees together with costs for travel and subsistence in the course of civil defence activities.

A table giving the details requested for each of the CRSAs in England and Wales has been placed in the Library.
