HC Deb 14 January 1991 vol 183 cc353-5W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many trading standards prosecutions were brought in 1990 by each local authority to whom such prosecutions are delegated, whether he is satisfied that similar standards of inspection and prosecution are being applied nationally; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Leigh

The table gives the numbers of prosecutions brought by local authority trading standards departments in Great Britain in the year 1 April 1989 to 31 March 1990. This is the latest period for which such information is available. Each local weights and measures authority is responsible for enforcing trading standards legislation in its area. The local authority associations have set up the Local Authority Co-ordinating Body on Trading Standards whose functions include co-ordinating operational practice.
