HC Deb 28 February 1991 vol 186 cc596-8W
Mr. Hume

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the Department of Education review of initial teacher education listing those organisations consulted.

Dr. Mawhinney

In July 1990, as Minister responsible for education in Northern Ireland, I announced that discussions about the future provision of initial teacher training would take place between the Department of Education and other interested parties to ensure that the teacher training institutions are well placed to give Northern Ireland teachers the best possible preparation for the challenges of teaching in the 21st century.

2 Part-time student numbers for teacher training colleges are not available.

These discussions are now taking place. During November and December departmental officials met informally the heads and senior staff of the four initial teacher training institutions to consider relevant issues.
