To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the size of the Inland Revenue in(a) 1979 and (b) the most recent date available.

Mr. Mellor

At 1 April 1979, the Inland Revenue had 84,645 permanent staff in post. At 1 January 1991, the number had reduced to 66,020.
