To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will state the principal achievements of the Tyneside urban development corporation.

Mr. Portillo

I was impressed by Tyne and Wear development corporation's achievements when I visited it last week. It has:

  • secured some £250 million of actual investment on the river banks; with a further £500 million to come;
  • created 5,500 jobs in Tyne and Wear;
  • brought 1.25 million sq ft of industrial/commercial space to the market;
  • reclaimed 300 acres of derelict land;
  • and completed over 350 housing units.
