To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what it the total number of state secondary schools in England; how many of them provide GCSE and A-level courses, respectively, in German; and if he will make a statement.

In January 1990 there were 3,453 maintained secondary schools in, England, of which 1,932 had sixth forms and 113 were sixth form colleges. The 1988 secondary schools staffing survey showed the following proportions of schools teaching German:

Year group 10, 74 per cent.
Year group 11, 74 per cent.
Sixth form1, 70 per cent.
1Based on schools with sixth forms containing 25 or more pupils.

Within these schools, 96 per cent. of German tuition time in Year Groups 10 and 11 was aimed towards GCSE, while in the sixth form 90 per cent. of tuition was aimed towards A-levels and 5 per cent. towards GCSE.
