HC Deb 27 February 1991 vol 186 cc495-6W
Rev. Martin Smyth

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations Her Majesty's Government have made to the Chinese Government in connection with continuing breaches of human rights and denial of democracy and human liberty.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We regularly express our concern to the Chinese authorities about reports of human rights abuses, and have made a number of representations, with our EC partners, about those detained following the suppression of the democracy movement in June 1989. We have told the Chinese Government that we regard the sentences imposed on the leaders of this movement as excessively harsh for actions not regarded as crimes in the west.
