HL Deb 25 February 1991 vol 526 c40WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in the light of the Ecclesiastical Exemption, they have examined the condition and prospects of Christ Church, Doncaster.

Baroness Blatch

No, but English Heritage have done so and have made representations to the church authorities. For the time being Christ Church remains under the control of its parochial church council. But I understand that the Church Commissioners have recently received proposals from the Bishop of Sheffield that the church should be declared redundant under Section 28 of the Pastoral Measure 1983. The department has nolocus standi at this stage but could become involved under the non-statutory arrangements described in paragraph 103 of DoE Circular 8/87 if the commissioners were subsequently to publish a draft redundancy scheme involving demolition. Meanwhile, repairs and maintenance remain the responsibility of the PCC or (if the church is declared redundant) the Diocesan Board of Finance.
