Mr. McAllion

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what was the cost of the Scottish Office publication "How to Become a Self-Governing School—Guidance for School Boards"; and from which budget this cost was met;

(2) if any school boards in Scotland requested the Scottish Office to send them copies of the Scottish Office publication "How to Become a Self-Governing School—Guidance for School Boards";

(3) how many copies were printed of the Scottish Office publication "How to Become a Self-Governing School—Guidance for School Boards"; and to whom those copies were distributed;

(4) whether the Scottish Office publication "How to Become a Self-Governing School—Guidance for School Boards" was sent to all Scottish school boards unsolicited.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The booklet, "How to Become a Self-Governing School," gives guidance to school boards on statutory procedures. Copies were therefore issued to all school boards. Copies, for information, were also sent to chief executives of regional and islands councils and to directors of education. In all, 12,000 copies of the guidance were printed at a cost of £12,510, which was part of planned expenditure for 1990–91 on self-governing schools.
