HC Deb 22 February 1991 vol 186 cc317-8W
Mr. Mallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assistance is available for the purposes of insulating homes against excessive noise in the vicinity of(a) low-flying zones and (b) military bases and installations; and in each case at what level of noise the assistance is made available.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

No grant assistance is available for the sound insulation of properties subject to noise from low-flying fixed or rotary wing aircraft. Noise insulation grant schemes around military airfields and helicopter landing sites provide for the installation of acoustic secondary double glazing at homes subject to the qualifying noise level of 70dB(A) averaged over a 12-hour period.

In addition, where a significant amount of night flying takes place (more than 20 movements per night regularly) the boundary of the scheme is extended to include dwellings subject to recurring maximum noise levels of 82dB(A) or greater.
