Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of total United Kingdom energy expenditure was accounted for by(a) transport, (b) buildings and (c) other industries in (i) 1989 and (ii) 1990.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

It is estimated that, in 1989, 44 per cent. of total United Kingdom energy expenditure, inclusive of taxes, was accounted for by transport; 42 per cent. was spent on heating buildings and 13 per cent. was accounted for by industry for purposes other than the heating of buildings and for transport. Data for 1990 are not yet available.

Data derived from table 9 of the "Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics 1990" and building research establishment publications.
