HC Deb 22 February 1991 vol 186 c315W
Mr. Gill

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what progress he can report on negotiation within the European Council towards a single standard of animal health and welfare, particularly in respect of the production of eggs, pigmeat and veal.

Mr. Maclean

Following pressure from my right hon. Friend the Minister, the Agriculture Council agreed this month to resume discussions as soon as possible on proposals for minimum welfare standards for pigs and calves. Further proposals are expected on the welfare of hens following the Commission's review of the existing battery hens directive. We are continuing to press for Community measures to control salmonella in poultry flocks.
