HL Deb 21 February 1991 vol 526 cc35-6WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about the recent death in prison of Tin Maung Win, an elected member of the Burmese Parliament and an organiser of the National League for Democracy; why he was imprisoned and whether he had been subjected to torture.

Lord Reay

Tin Maung Win died on 18th January in Insein Gaol, Rangoon. The Burmese authorities claim he died of leukaemia complicated by acute pneumonia. Although we have heard reports that he suffered from ill-health, his family were unaware at the time of his arrest in October that he had leukaemia. We are aware of unconfirmed reports that he was ill-treated.
