To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the annual income tax payable under the new arrangements by married women with a gross daily income of(a) £0.5 million, (b) £1 million and (c) £1.8 million.

[holding answer 18 February 1991]: If all the income were subject to tax and the only relief available were the personal allowance, the income tax liability for 1990–91 would be:

  2. (b) £145,995,693
  3. (c) £262,795,693
