HL Deb 13 February 1991 vol 526 c7WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In what ways they and other governments are acting together to secure the scrapping of surplus and redundant arms and ammunition in the former GDR and other parts of Eastern Europe and to prevent their sale and use elsewhere.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness)

Under the terms of the CFE Treaty, all equipment of types limited by the treaty (i.e., tanks, combat aircraft, artillery, armoured combat vehicles and attack helicopters) in excess of the treaty limits must be destroyed or converted to non-military use according to internationally agreed procedures. The disposal of equipment of other types is a matter for the governments concerned. From the date of German unification, the German government assumed responsibility for all military equipment belonging to the former GDR.
