HC Deb 08 February 1991 vol 185 cc284-5W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions have taken place with the Governments of Japan and South Korea on mining in Antarctica.

Mr. Garel-Jones

None.

Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if any review is taking place of Her Majesty's Government's policy in respect of mining in the Antarctic; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gard-Jones

Following the outcome of the special consultative meeting in Chile, we are considering options to achieve a consensus, within the Antarctic treaty system, which is rational and scientifically based.
