To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have now been summonsed in the Merseyside area for non-payment of the poll tax; and if he will make a statement.

By the end of December 1990, the six magistrates courts in the Merseyside area-Knowsley, Liverpool, St. Helens, North Sefton, South Sefton and Wirral-had issued a total of 47,360 summonses in relation to non-payment of the community charge.
