§ Mr. ButlerTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has on the seroprevalence of HIV in Rakai, Uganda, among(a) men and (b) women in the age groups (i) 20 to 24 years and (ii) 25 to 29 years; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. ChalkerHer Majesty's Government have not undertaken research of its own into this specific question, although I understand that the centre for international research of the United States Bureau of the Census published in May 1990 a review of certain studies into the seroprevalence of HIV in Uganda. The ODA and the Medical Research Council are jointly funding a five-year research project into the epidemiology of AIDS in Uganda; results are not yet available from this work.
The situation regarding HIV infection globally remains one of considerable concern. The United Kingdom is continuing to provide substantial levels of support from the overseas aid programme to the WHO global programme on AIDS—the GPA—and to a number of national AIDS control programmes developed within the framework of the GPA.
