HC Deb 06 February 1991 vol 185 c180W
Mr. Amos

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on the progress in implementing a smoke-free policy throughout his Department.

Mr. Leigh

The Department is working towards a non-smoking working environment. At present, smoking is prohibited in most common areas including conference rooms, most meeting rooms, libraries, waiting rooms, reception areas, lifts and toilets. Smoking is banned in any office where a majority of staff vote for such a ban. Copies of the Department's policy statement on smoking and an example of a notice to visitors to the Department have been placed in the House Library.

Mr. Amos

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make it his policy to ensure that every non-smoking employee in his Department has the right to work in a smoke-free area; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Leigh

The Department's policy has been jointly agreed between management and the departmental trade union side.
