HC Deb 06 February 1991 vol 185 c176W
Mr. John Garrett

To ask the Lord President of the Council how many times the royal prerogative has been used through the Privy Council to establish orders in the last 10 years.

Mr. MacGregor

It would not be possible to provide a precise answer except at disproportionate cost. Approximately 7,000 Orders in Council have been made in the last 10 years of which, it is estimated, some 20 per cent. have been prerogative orders, dealing with such matters as the prorogation and dissolution of Parliament, the grant and amendment of royal charters, the government of dependent territories and the approval of reports of the judicial committee of the Privy Council.
