HC Deb 06 February 1991 vol 185 c199W
Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what environmental protection and nature conservation provisions will be required of recipients of specific support schemes for organic farming.

Mr. Curry

There are no specific support schemes for organic farming, but farmers are able to benefit from a number of general schemes. I refer the hon. Member to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Norfolk, North-West (Mr. Bellingham) on 14 December 1990 (Official Report, c. 539). The standards established by the United Kingdom register of organic food standards and by other organic sector bodies already contain relevant provisions for the conservation of the environment. However, it is too early to say what additional requirements might form part of any specific support schemes for organic farming, the introduction of which is dependent on agreement in Brussels.
