HL Deb 06 February 1991 vol 525 cc47-8WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about a bomb allegedly dropped from a Soviet aircraft near two Lithuanian villages and attacks by the army on officials in customs posts on the Lithuanian and Byelorussian border.

The Earl of Caithness

We have no independent confirmation of press reports that unidentified military officers attacked customs posts manned by Lithuanians on the Byelorussian border on the evening of 27th January.

The bomb dropped on 28th January is reported by an independent Soviet news agency, quoting a Soviet military spokesman, to have been dropped by a plane engaged in training exercises, which made a navigation error in bad weather. We have no reason to doubt this report.
