HL Deb 06 February 1991 vol 525 c47WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have made or will make representations to the Government of Burma about the conditions of house arrest and virtual solitary confinement imposed in Rangoon during the last 18 months on Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League of Democracy and recipient of the Human Rights prize of the European Parliament.

The Earl of Caithness

We have made repeated representations, both bilaterally and in company with our EC partners and other like-minded States, to the Burmese military authorities to urge them to release political prisoners immediately, including Aung San Suu Kyi. We will continue to urge the Burmese military authorities to adhere to internationally accepted standards of behaviour and to respect human rights.
