To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on waiting lists in the Northern regional health authority.

Mr. Dorrell

I understand from Northern regional health authority that, in the 12 months to September 1990, the number of patients waiting more than a year for in-patient treatment fell by more than 13 per cent. in the region as a whole.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what are the latest figures announced to fund the waiting list initiative.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

As my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Health announced on 16 January, £35 million will be made available through the waiting list fund in 1991–92 to tackle long waiting times.
