HC Deb 04 February 1991 vol 185 cc64-5W
Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what method is used to classify general practices in terms of social structure and deprivation.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The basis for designating an area serviced by a general practitioner as deprived is the Jarman index of under-privileged areas. The index, which uses 1981 census data at postcode sector level, consists of eight factors: levels of unemployment, elderly living alone, overcrowding, children under five, unskilled workers, single-parent households, ethnic minorities and population movement.
