§ Mr. GalbraithTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what method is used to classify general practices in terms of social structure and deprivation.
§ Mr. Michael ForsythThe basis for designating an area serviced by a general practitioner as deprived is the Jarman 65W index of under-privileged areas. The index, which uses 1981 census data at postcode sector level, consists of eight factors: levels of unemployment, elderly living alone, overcrowding, children under five, unskilled workers, single-parent households, ethnic minorities and population movement.
