HC Deb 04 February 1991 vol 185 cc23-4W
Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what action he intends to take as a result of the Sports Council's report in respect of happenings during the Commonwealth Games in Auckland and the response by the Wales Commonwealth Games Council; and if he will make a statement.

The threshold for 1990–91 was set at £18 above the average domestic rate bill per adult; £20 million will be paid out to personal chargepayers on this basis over the whole of Wales.

The scheme which will be in operation during 1991–92 differs in three respects. Firstly, the forecast community charge in the above calculation is replaced by the actual 1990–91 community charge. Secondly, the threshold has been increased to £37. Finally, the amount paid out to personal chargepayers over the whole of Wales under the scheme in 1991–92 will be £62 million, £42 million more than the relief in 1990–91.

The data for the communities requested are shown in the following tables.

Mr. Nicholas Bennett

These are matters for the Sports Council for Wales, in discussion with the Commonwealth Games Council, and I do not propose to intervene.
