Mr. Hardy

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what action he will take to prevent the further importation of mahogany from the Philippines; and how many such imports there have been since 1988.

Mr. Sainsbury

The Government attach importance to the sustainable management of tropical forests. Imports from the Philippines are subject to the same controls as imports from other countries.

Available statistics of imports since 1988 of mahogany from the Philippines are:

m3 metric tonnes £000
1988 980 566 252
1989 74 40 21
1990 308 131 126
11991 18 12 7
1 January to October.

Some other imports may have been accounted for under the residual codes within the SITC headings 247.52 and 248.5.
