To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how much grant was given by his Department to West Kent housing association in respect of the proposed voluntary transfer of housing stock.

My Department has not given any grant to the West Kent housing association in respect of the proposed transfer of the new town housing stock at Basildon; nor are there any powers so to do. However, in accordance with the provisions of the New Towns (Transfer of Housing Stock) Regulations 1990, as amended, the Commission for the New Towns will pay the reasonable costs incurred by both the West Kent housing association and Basildon district council in connection with a ballot of tenants.
