HC Deb 19 December 1991 vol 201 cc282-3W
Mr. Barry Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the difference in pension payments for the ranks of(a) major, (b) commander and (c) group captain between those who retired (i) just before the Prices and Incomes Act affected the calculations, (ii) those whose pension calculations were affected and (iii) those who retired after it had been repealed; and what would be the total cost of ending the anomaly.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Maximum rates of retired pay which can currently be received by officers who retired in particular months immediately before, during, and immediately after the period of pay restraint policy operative from 1976 to 1978 are as follows:

Retired pay (£)
Major Commander Group Captain
Month of retirement Original award Current rate Original award Current rate Original award Current rate
March 1976 2,957 13,358 3,617 16,339 4,380 19,786
April 1976 3,108 11,156 3,768 13,525 4,380 15,721
April 1977 3,210 10,039 3,870 12,104 4,481 14,015
April 1978 4,220 11,545 5,091 13,927 6,062 16,584

Original awards were calculated, and have subsequently been increased, in accordance with the normal regulations of the scheme. There are no alternative rates of award from which the cost requested could be calculated.
