HL Deb 18 December 1991 vol 533 cc76-8WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in the event of repairs to Heveningham Hall becoming necessary while it is in the hands of the Receiver in Bankruptcy, and of the local planning authority failing to carry out the repairs and charge the receiver, the Secretary of State for the Environment will himself repair the hall and charge the receiver.

Baroness Blatch

Heveningham Hall remains subject to the listed building control and related powers of intervention by local authorities and central government. While the Secretary of State for the Environment has powers to authorise English Heritage to carry out works which are urgently necessary for the preservation of an unoccupied listed building, and to recover the cost of the works, the Government consider, on the basis of English Heritage's report on the condition of the hall in August 1991, that there is no immediate prospect of such action being necessary, nor would it be in the interests of the receiver to allow the condition of the building to deteriorate to that extent. However the Government will continue to watch the situation at Heveningham carefully.
