§ Mr. LathamTo ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will make a statement on the introduction of European Community directive 90/396/ EEC, relating to appliances for burning gaseous fuels; and whether he will draw it to the attention of Her Majesty's consuls in Spain and Portugal, following the deaths of British subjects as a result of defective water heaters in their holiday apartments.
§ Mr. LeighThe European Community Directive 90/396/EEC relating to appliances burning gaseous fuels was adopted by the Council of Ministers in June 1990 and will shortly be implemented in United Kingdom legislation and that of the other member states of the Community. However, transitional arrangements will not give mandatory effect to the requirements of the directive until 1 January 1996. It is the responsibility of the Spanish and Portuguese authorities to implement and enforce the directive in their territories.
