HC Deb 18 December 1991 vol 201 c183W
24. Mr. Eastham

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what efforts Her Majesty's Government are making to increase the pressure on the military Government of Burma to hand over power to the National League for Democracy.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We have repeatedly called on the Burmese military junta to respect the results of the elections in May 1990 which the National League for Democracy won by a landslide. The EC suspended all non-humanitarian aid to Burma in 1988 and in 1991, at British initiative, imposed an embargo on defence sales to Burma. On 30 November, we co-sponsored a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an improvement in the human rights situation and for progress towards democratic government in Burma.
