HC Deb 17 December 1991 vol 201 cc140-1W
Mr. Maginnis

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he has had specific discussions at meetings of the Anglo-Irish Conference about Republican terrorist incidents with a cross-frontier element which have occurred in Northern Ireland since 1 January 1990; and whether he has had any commitment from the Irish Republic that further security measures are to be put in place.

Dr. Mawhinney

Discussions on security matters form a major part of the business of all Anglo-Irish Conference meetings. Both Governments have been constant in their determination to achieve the greatest possible security co-operation. Progress has been made in a number of areas, including joint threat assessment, liaison structures, technical co-operation and communications. The commitment of both Governments to improving the effectiveness of cross-border co-operation remains unswerving.

Mr. Maginnis

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many Republican terrorist incidents which have occurred in Northern Ireland since I January 1990 are estimated to have had a cross-frontier element; and if he will give details.

Dr. Mawhinney

It would not be appropriate to disclose detailed information held by the Royal Ulster Constabulary about incidents in which charges may be brought.
