§ Mr. Frank FieldTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence in what year he gave the first estimate for the Trident Faslane facility; what the latest estimated cost is; and what is the difference from the cost originally announced in both real and money terms.
§ Mr. Archie HamiltonOn 10 May 1985, the cost of the Trident-related works programme at Clyde submarine base, Faslane was first estimated at £210 million at 1984–85 prices, of which £84 million was directly attributable to Trident. The cost estimate this year for the latter element is £176 million with future costs at 1990–91 prices, but past expenditure not revalued. A precise comparison between figures is not possible without disproportionate effort and cost.
