asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give any encouragement to local authorities to purchase privately-owned houses which are for sale, in order to rent them to families on housing lists who cannot afford to purchase a house themselves.

Local authorities are encouraged to provide resources to housing associations to enable them to purchase property suitable for renting to families in need. Authorities are also encouraged to acquire property for disposal on shared ownership leases.
