HC Deb 09 December 1991 vol 200 cc300-1W
Mr. Nicholas Brown

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list all the changes to the VAT system since 1978–79, including both changes in the rate of VAT and changes in classification of goods and services.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

From 18 June 1979, the higher rate of VAT, which was applied at the rate of 12½ per cent. to petrol, domestic electric appliances, radios, televisions and hi-fi equipment, pleasure boats and aircraft, towing caravans, photographic equipment, furs and jewellery, was abolished and the standard rate of VAT was increased from 8 to 15 per cent. On 1 April 1991 the standard rate was increased to 17½ per cent.

Other major changes to the VAT system are listed in the "Financial Statement and Budget Reports" for each year.
