HC Deb 06 December 1991 vol 200 c246W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the legislation covering deer farming in Great Britain.

Mr. Curry

The Tuberculosis (Deer) Order 1989 and the Tuberculosis (Deer) Notice of Intended Slaughter and Compensation Order 1989 cover farmed deer. The Welfare of Livestock (Prohibited Operations) Regulations 1982 prohibit the taking of deer antlers in velvet. The Deer Act 1991 mainly covers wild deer but some if its provisions are of relevance to farmed deer. Other legislation not specific to deer but covering livestock, animal health, welfare and slaughtering generally would also apply to farmed deer. In addition, an EC directive concerning public health and animal health problems affecting the production and placing on the market of rabbit meat and farmed game (91/495/EEC) has been agreed. Member states are required to implement this directive by 1 January 1993.
