To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current annual expenditure on the prison service; and what it was in 1979 in current prices.

Total expenditure on the prison service in 1990–91 was £1,342 million compared with £665 million in 1979–80 in 1990–91 prices. This represents an increase of nearly 102 per cent.
