To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current number of police in England; and what was the comparable position in 1987.

At the end of September 1991 there were 118,748 police officers in England, compared to 115,592 in September 1987, an increase of 3,156. There were 44,646 civilian support staff in September 1991 in England, compared to 39,484 in September 1987, an increase of 5,162.
