HC Deb 05 December 1991 vol 200 c199W
Mr. Barron

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many kidney transplant operations have taken place in the Northern general hospital in Sheffield in the years 1988–89, 1989–90 and 1990–91, respectively; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dorrell

Renal transplant services, provided initially at the Royal Hallamshire hospital, Sheffield, were transferred to the Northern general hospital, Sheffield in 1990.

According to information supplied by the United Kingdom Support Service Authority, the number of cadaveric kidney transplants performed in those hospitals for the years requested is as follows:

Number
1988 24
1989 51
1990 28
1991 1291
1 This figure is provisional and is for the period 1 January to 28 November.

Availability of donor organs is the key factor in the number of transplant operations performed.
