Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 21 November 1991]: Prior to 1 April 1991, reliable staffing information District level was not centrally available. The provisional information held centrally, since that date, for Guy's and Lewisham Trust is given in the table.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people are waiting for(a) in-patient care and (b) out-patient appointments in each specialty at Guy's hospital for each quarter for the financial year 1990–91 and for the first two quarters of the financial year 1991–92.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 21 November 1991]: Information was not collected centrally on waiting lists at Guy's and Lewisham hospitals before 1 April 1991. Provisional data reported by the trust shows that the number of patients, including day cases, waiting for admission in the current year was as follows:

Numbers
June 1991 8,500
September 1991 8,000

I understand that Guy's and Lewisham Hospital NHS Trust estimate that its waiting list for in-patients and day-case treatment fell by 14.8 per cent. over the 12 months to September 1991.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people were(a) seen as outpatients or (b) treated as in-patients by each specialty at Guy's hospital in each quarter of the financial year 1990–91 and the first two quarters of the financial year 1991–92.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 21 November 1991]: Information was not collected centrally on activity at Guy's and Lewisham hospitals before 1 April 1991. However, I understand that Guy's and Lewisham Hospitals NHS Trust estimate that activity in the six months April 1991 to September 1991 was greater than in the corresponding period in 1990 and that the trust expects full-year increases in activity of at least 9 per cent.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the current financial situation for both capital and revenue at Guy's hospital.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 21 November 1991]: For the period 1 April to 30 September 1991 the Guy's and Lewisham Trust reported a defict of £1.3 million—1.5 per cent. of total turnover. The trust has plans to eliminate this by the year end. Capital expenditure is controlled by the trust's external financing limit. The trust has operated within its limit for the first half of the year and plans to remain within it for the remainder of the year.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many times, and on each occasion for what length of time(a) elective and (b) emergency admissions have been (i) reduced and (ii) stopped at Guy's hospital in each quarter of the financial year 1990–91 and the first two quarters of the financial year 1991–92.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 21 November 1991: This information is not held centrally. The hon. Member may wish to contact Sir Phillip Harris, chairman of the Guy's and Lewisham Hospitals NHS Trust, for details.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what were the average, maximum and minimum numbers of beds(a) available and (b) occupied for each specialty at Guy's hospital in each quarter of the financial year 1990–91 and the first two quarters of the financial year 1991–92.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 21 November 1991]: Up to 1990–91 data on available beds were collected at hospital site level by type of ward rather than specialty. Data for 1990–91 will be published early in 1992 in "Summary of Bed Availability, England, Financial year 1990–91". From 1991–92 data on available beds will be collected at directly managed unit and trust level. The 1991–92 statistics will be published by early 1993.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) elective operations, (b) scheduled operating sessions and (c) non-scheduled operating sessions were cancelled in each specialty at Guy's hospital in each quarter of the financial year 1990–91 and the first two quarters of the financial year 1991–91.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 21 November 1991]: Statistics on operating theatre sessions are collected annually, after the end of the financial year. Data for 1991–92 in respect of the Guy's and Lewisham NHS Hospitals Trust will be published early in 1993. Data about operating theatre sessions in 1990–91 in hospitals managed by Lewisham and North Southwark DHA will be published early in 1992, in "NHS Operating Theatres Availability and Use, England, Financial year 1990–91".
